Older Adult Programs Knox Box: The New Lenox Fire Protection District (NLFPD) Knox Box Program is a Loan and Purchase program for citizens with disabling medical conditions that render them unable to open the door for emergency personnel. Qualifying conditions may include but are not limited to: wheel chair bound, visually impaired, special needs patients, or patients with medical conditions that require extensive care and/or treatment, residents with medical conditions that are often home alone or live alone. Smoke Alarm/CO Detector Assistance: The NLFPD will assist older adults within the district with testing their smoke alarms and CO detectors if they are unable. The fire district has free smoke alarms and CO detectors, as well as batteries, which are available to older adults who need them. A Matter of Balance: The NLFPD participates in the A Matter of Balance Program along with Safe Communities New Lenox. A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. A Matter of Balance includes eight two-hour sessions for a small group led by a trained facilitator. This nationally recognized program was developed at the Roybal Center at Boston University. Home Safety Checks: The NLFPD can schedule appointments with older adults to go over the safety of their home. This includes steps to assist with fall prevention and fire safety. File of Life: The "File of Life" program is a free program to residents of the New Lenox Fire Protection District. The "File of Life" is a refrigerator-style magnet folder that contains vital patient information for EMS personnel in the event of an emergency.
